It looks like Sacred Heart Cathedral has another very strong incoming class coming in again this year. Many of the boys will again come out of the Oakland Soldiers program. Sooner or later S.H.C. should start winning with all of this talent. They have been a major disappointment the past few seasons being outhustled and outcoached by their W.C.A.L rivals. Serra's incoming class is also stacked with four Top 150 caliber players and Bellarmine has landed a lot of young players the last two years so it should be another great season in the rugged W.C.A.L. Look out for Valley Christian as well. They are on the rise. Mitty's great run should end after this season. Riordan and S.I. are always good. St. Francis in rebuilding mode. It will be another exciting season in one of the best leagues in the state year after year.

It will be interesting to see how the new Irish coach does. He will be going against some of the best coaches around like Coach Eagleson, Coach Rapp, Coach Riordan and Coach Schneider. These guys all do a great job with the talent that they are given. Especially Rapp and Riordan. They overachieve every year with their kids. There are no slouches in this league which makes watching W.C.A.L. games great. You must admit the kids play man to man suffocating defense, their are no showboats and the games are played the right way in front of big crowds. What kid would not love to play in that kind of atmosphere ?

Some of the top returning players in the W.C.A.L are Drew Gordon, Colin Chiverton, Enoch Andoh and John Adams from Mitty, Stephen Lumpkins from Serra, Kevin Greene and Jerry Brown from Sacred Heart Cathedral, Paul Toboni and Vince Legarza from St. Ignatius, Daniel Cannon and Jorge Camacho from Riordan, Tyler Olsen and Shawn Grant from St. Francis, Ricky Bose from Bellarmine and Tim Harris from Valley Christian. Some up and coming impact players if not this season then in the near future include Joseph Slocum and Teandre Hubbard from Sacred Heart Cathedral, Freddie Eberhardt and Max Fodor from Bellarmine, John Vincent, Connor McGrath, Andrew McAlindon and Daelyn Pacheco from Serra, Amir Carlisle, Max Hooper, and Kyle Travis from Valley Christian, and Spencer Britschgi from St Francis. There are probably some players that I left out but these are the ones that have stood out at the showcases and on the A.A.U. circuit.

Mitty should be the favorite to win a state title in 2008. They have at least three Division 1 players in Drew Gordon, Collin Chiverton and Enoch Andoh and have experience in playing in big games. They should be motivated after losing a heartbreaker to Mater Dei in the finals. The Monarchs also have a very good coach in Brian Eagleson and they play in a very competitive league so the W.C.A.L should be represented well in post season play. The rest of the league will fight and scratch to see who will finish high in the standings in order to receive a high seeding for the section playoffs. W.C.A.L teams have dominated C.C.S play in the past and should do well again in '08.

If Sacred Heart can share the ball and play together consistanly, they will be a dangerous team. The incoming freshmen are very good but need to adjust to the league and a year on the lower division team would be the best thing for their development. S.H. should take notes from their girls team which plays the team game beautifully. Bellarmine is my darkhorse pick as they will be very tall and talented. I've seen Eberhardt and Fodor. Both very nice offensive prospects. Serra's new kids are all very skilled, play different positions on the floor and should compliment each other. A year on a lower division team would be beneficial. The good thing is that these young players will receive good coaching for 4 years. Valley Christian has a history of pulling up underclassmen early so I wouldn't be surprised if they have a young squad again. Traditionally, the Catholic schools have so much talent to draw from so they are strong on all three levels (Frosh, Junior Varsity, Varsity). It is a luxury and a nice problem to have. When there are great young players coming up it creates better competition which makes everyone better because people are fighting for their roster spots and starting positions. Sounds like the league will be strong for many years to come.

Riordan's Daniel Cannon is also a Division 1 football talent and made first-team W.C.A.L as a defensive back last season. Many Pac-10 schools are interested in the Crusader standout. Also, two players mentioned above: Andrew Mc Alindon (Quarterback) and John Vincent(Wide Receiver) from Serra are big-time football prospects for the Padres. Mc Alindon is 6'5" with a strong arm and good mobility and Vincent is a fast, athletic leaper with good hands. All should have outstanding football campaigns before the basketball season arrives.

Speaking of multi-sport athletes, how about Drew Gordon of Mitty. He is one of the top Track and Field standouts in the State of California in the shot put and discus. One of Mitty's all-time greats.....

Stephen Lumpkins, a left-handed pitcher from Serra is also a Division 1
baseball prospect. He is being recruited in both basketball and baseball.
