Score: De La Salle 42 - McClymonds 44
Location: Haas Pavillion - Berekely, CA
There was a lot of anticipation for this game between two nationally ranked teams and arguably the best teams in the Bay Area. The game definitely lived up to the hype. It was a back and forth battle throughout the game, but the Warriors were able to hold on with a 44 to 42 victory.
The first quarter went to McClymonds. Frank Otis helped his team gain a five point lead by scoring 6 of their 13 points, giving the Warriors a 13 to 8 lead. The quarter saw McClymonds start a 9 to 1 run at the 5:13 mark. Jose Rivera ended the run with a three pointer at the 1:07 mark which closed out the quarter. The Warriors were playing a 2-3 zone and would trap the wings and corners which gave the Spartans a lot of headaches.
The next two quarters were back and forth battles. In the second quarter, both teams scored 10 points. The Spartans' Dominic Martellaro scored 8 of his 11 points in the second including two three point bombs. The Warriors were a little more balanced with Otis scoring 4, Damario Simms scoring 3 and Christopher Jackson scoring 3 points as well. The Spartans jumped into a 2-3 zone that made it more difficult for Otis to get open and forced the Warriors to hit from the outside. The score at halftime was 18 - 23 in favor of McClymonds.
The third quarter was one of runs. Spartan coach Frank Allocco made adjustments at half time to help the Spartans against the trapping defense. This allowed De La Salle to start the quarter on a 9 to 4 run that tied the game at 27 a piece. Martellaro and Rivera both hit three pointers during this stretch which woke up the Spartan fans. The Warriors responded nicely. Damario Simms hit 3 point shot with time running out on the shot clock and then Damon Powell had a monster dunk over Jeff Powers that had the entire place on its feet. The Warriors finished the quarter on a 7 to 2 run which had the teams separated by 5 points yet again at 29 to 34.
McClymonds started the fourth quarter with two free throws, but more importantly giving John McArthur, the 6'9" sophmore his fourth foul which kept him out for an important part of the fourth. Then Jose Rivera went on a tear hitting 7 of his game high 19 points in succession again knotting the game at 36 a piece. Then for the final three minutes the teams were going back and forth. At the 29 second mark, Brandon Smith hit a three pointer to bring the Spartans to within 1 at 42-43. Quincy Hill was then fouled and hit the front end of the one and one, but missed the back end which gave the Warriors a 44 to 42 lead. With 16.2 seconds left, De La Salle worked the ball around and Jose Rivera took a 3 point shot that just went off the back iron. McClymonds got the rebound and was fouled with 0.6 seconds left. Damario Simms missed the free throw, but obviously there was not enough time for the Spartans to score.
SMU bound Frank Otis led the Warriors with 12 points, William Cherry had 9 and Damon Powell and Simms each had 8. The Spartans were led by Rivera's 19 points. Martellaro had 11 and Junior guard Brandon Smith had 9.
This was quite an entertaining game and I'd expect to see these same two teams going at it in the Division 1 Nor Cal Finals in Sacramento.
