THE LIBERTY AND HERITAGE WAS A GREAT GAME. LIBERTY IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPROVED TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE EVEN THOUGH THEY STILL HAVE PROBLEMS HOLDING ON TO LEADS. THE GUARD AARON MEEKS HELD HIS ON GUARDING KNOX AND DALTON. NEXT YEAR THIS TEAM COULD BE A CONTENDER WITH ALL THE SCHOOLS LEAVING AND THE TALENT THAT WILL STILL BE THERE.EVEN WITH ALL THAT SAID HERITAGE WON AND WE SHOULD GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR PULLING A COME BACK WIN AGAINST A WELL IMPROVED LIBERTY SQUAD.

GREAT GAME!!!
IN A GREAT ATMOSPHERE!!!

Great game? Once Heritage started to play about half way through the third quarter, it was only a matter of time. No doubt about it, Liberty is improved this year. Why are you talking about next year already? Its always next year with Liberty. Heritage never gave up last night. Heritage stuck with their program. Liberty still seems to be searching for a program.

Great Atmosphere & Great Game. Liberty played very well in the first half and was up as much as 31 - 18. Heritage was slow out of the gate for this game. It was just a matter of time before Heritage starting playing the kind of ball that is reflective of their overall record. Liberty's intensity has definitely improved, they played with a lot of passion, and agression. They definitely out-rebounded Heritage in this game. This game sets up a great rematch, especially if Liberty catches Heritage napping (in other words looking ahead on the schedule again).

It would be more accurate to grade the kids on the positions they played for the game. Smith played PG and Knox played the 2. (Also shouldn’t he pass the ball to the open man? Why be critical of that? That’s what a good PG does)

A PG: I look at his ability to run the offense (i.e. ball handling, creating plays, & decision making), his ability to play defense, and then to a lesser extent scoring. I would give Smith an A- overall. He did have an off game shooting; I didn’t see the defense being the ENTIRE cause of it, but Knox did put great pressure on him. Why didn’t e have more points? It could’ve just been one of those nights, or the beating he took around the rack. He did miss about 5 min when he came out for what looked like leg cramps, and those could’ve affected him in the 2cnd half? He did what his team needed from him, and DLS didn’t need any more points; they needed him to run the team. I like the fact that he wasn’t forcing any shots; he took open lanes, and open shots. Bottom-line 3 points with 9 assists (I guess I miss counted), and 5 steals in a 23-point win, for a PG.

A shooting guard: which is what Knox played, I would grade more on scoring, then defense and support of his teammates. I would give him a B overall for the game. He couldn't figure out how to be effective offensively against Rivera's defense (Rivera has a few inches on him, but Knox still needs to be able to overcome that (I believe he can). Why couldn’t he? Maybe it just was an off night; maybe it is due to playing teams who don’t play team defense (just about everybody in the BVAL). On offense he had a tough defender on him, and tuned the ball over a few times, and he needed to have a bigger game than 7 points for his team to have had a chance to win. He did do a solid job on Smith defensively, didn’t give him anything easy.

I wish Knox would have ran the point, I think he would have done it better than the 2 guys they had running it, (The back up was a turn over waiting to happen, and their starter kept trying to get fancy, and every time he did Smith just poked the ball out). It would have been a treat to see Knox vs. Smith on both ends.

Rivera gets the A+, obvious player of the game. Blocked 2-3 of Knox’s shots, caused him to turn it over a few times and always had pressure on him for a great defensive effort on a great offensive player. On offense he had 23 points, and a number of assists (He also had a great game vs. Antioch).

Heard Antioch pulled one out from Pittsburgh in a messy one, keeping their second place hopes alive. Anyone have some insight on that one?

No so fast! Some of your points are valid, then some are way off.
This what I agree with: Rivera gets an A+, he had an outstanding game.
This what I disagree with: Smith gets an A-? For what? Isn't this the same player who went up to Oregon and averaged 16 ppg, about 8 assists pg, and about 2-3 steals? And this was against better over-all talent than Heritage has, right? The stats he put up in Oregon were in A to A- range. What he did last Friday, was no where near A-
territory. Knox played very good defense on Smith and held him to 3 points. With the shooters that DLS has, you can probably plug any
reasonable pg in there and they will get you at least 5-6 assists. I would say Smith gets a B in Heritage game.

I also disagree with your point of a 2 guard not playing defense:
Most 2 guards are probably the most atheletic players on the team, and they are required on occasion to guard the best player on the opposing team, and score points. In my opinion Knox did half of that.
He held the best player on DLS to 3 points, but he didn't score nearly enough from that 2 guard position.

Someone said both players did not have their best game. That I can agree with. But you stating Smith gets an A-, and Knox a B is crazy.

I know you are a DLS supporter (that's great!) and by now you know I am a Heritage supporter (that's great as well), and your analysis is pretty good, but I just have a difference of opinion as I stated above.

I don't agree with the guy who says you have an agenda. I am the one who posted the overview of the game. To respond, to what you were saying, I just felt Smith had a better game as a PG, than Knox did as a SG. I don't think any PG could run the DLS offense, I think it is a complex system that takes a very heady, low turn over, selfless PG, as shown by as I have seen their last 4 PG's. If you think my opinion of the 2 player's is crazy, I am ok with that, you are entitled to you opinion as well.

For the record, I am a fan of DLS because I enjoy their team 1st mentality. I am more of an Allocco fan than I am a DLS fan. I think if Smith went out with the focus to score, he is capable of doing that. I have seen the kid do that. Against Heritage I simply didn't feel Knox's defense was the main reason for his point total. I am not sure what he avergaed in Oregon, I believe he is capable of that, I just don't get the impresion that would be anybody on DLS's roster goal. The are a selfless team, and I enjoy watching that.

Also for the record, I like what is going on at Heritage, and I think they should win BVAL 2-3 times over the next 4 years. I support them in their efforts as well.

To Liberty, it was a great game, played with intensity, but they came up short. To Heritage it was just another game on the schedule. Heritage has played in a lot of big games over the last couple of years, so they were able to weather the storm. Liberty has less experience in that atmosphere, so it will serve them well in the future, but they have a ways to go to compete with Heritage at this point. If you use the JV game as a future barometer, the future looks pretty good for Heritage, and not as good for Liberty. And what about the poor sportsmanship? A Liberty kid got a Heritage kid in a headlock, threw him down to the ground, the Heritage kid hit his head but got up, a second Liberty player pushed him, and all hell almost broke loose. The Liberty player got a technical and the coach left him in the game. Whats that all about?

I UNDERSTAND THAT ABOUT THE GUY GETTING PUT IN A HEADLOCK BUT I GUESS YOU ALSO DIDINT SEE THE GUY FROM HERITAGE THROW A PUNCH. IM SURPRISED TO SEE THE LIBERTY PLAYER SHOW SOME SPORTSMANSHIP AND NOT HIT BACK. THE REFS DIDNT SEE IT BUT I HAVE THE GAME ON FILM HE HIT HIM. SO DONT TRY TO MAKE LIBERTY KIDS SEEM LIKE THERE THE ONLY ONE'S THAT DID WRONG.

So you think it was ok for the Liberty player to put a kid in a headlock and take him down to the ground? You think that was ok? Your coach didn't even shake hands with the heritage coach. You think that was ok too? Its too bad because the Heritage coaches did a lot of good while they were at Liberty. Healthy rivalries are a good thing, but this isn't healthy for anyone if you think that what happened last night was ok.

Although Douglas had an off night, you did not mention that they ran three different guys at him all night. You say you were the game, than you should have noticed that no one player can win a game. They did a good job on containing him, which he stated in the paper. Also, you are talking about DLS which is ranked in the State. And yes with a healthy Tim Williams it maybe close. I mean give the kid Douglas some credit, Max Preps stated that he is the “most improved player in the State” avg. 26.4 a game, Nor Cal Preps rated him at 28 of the top 40 players in Nor Cal and the # 6 top point guard. How many other kids beside Williams was ranked in the BVAL?

Give credit were it is due!!!!

Douglas dominated Smith. Douglas dropped 25 points on Brandon and a battle that everybody thought Smith was going to win again again.Douglas also showed his defensive skills but shutting Smith down to 1 point.Smith is a good guard but he ran into THE BEST GUARD IN THE LEAGUE.

Calm down sparky. I was at the game and they did not run 3 guys at him. I said he had a tuff night. He had Smith guarding him, when he got a foul, they had Estrada on him the rest of the half, then Smith was back on him. If you are counting the bench player who guarded him after Smith and Estrada were done for the night, then lol ok he had 3 diferent guys at DIFFERENT TIMES IN THE GAME. Reality is, Smith and Estrada locked him down, neiter were bumping him like Douglas claimed. It sounded like an excuse. Please stick to the facts, don't lie and say 3 guys were running at him al night.

And talk about giving credit how about just saying Smith and Estrada did a great job defening him, peroid. Neither of them needed a 2cnd man to help them. Please, no lame excuses of bumping Calvin.
I credit to Calviin for improving this summer, lets see how he will adjust the next time they play. If you are his fan, or friend or him, you know that if he is as good as you say he is, he will be able to have an answer for that defense next game at home.

LOL! You still need to calm down. Douglas is definatley not the best guard in the league (see Jordan Knox or Brandon Smith about that) and, he didn't stop Smith AT ALL. Before the game I spoke with a friend of the Smith family, and he told me Smith was very sick and that he was suprised to see the kid suited up. On the Antioch vs DLS board somebody confirms he was sick siteing Smith had the flu. Besides Smith being sick, your arguments are invalid because:

Douglas on Defense:

1. Douglas didn't shut down Smith. Smith took 4 shots, all layups, where he got past Douglas easily. One attempt got him to the line, and the other 3 layups all rimmed out. At the line Smith was 1 of 6-- I believe. SOOOO how is this Douglas shutting Smith down?

2. Smith didn't need to score with the 2 of the best 3 point shooters in the league drilling them their shots! ( Jose----Jose-Jose-Jose, & Jeff Powers)

Douglas on Offense:

1. Calvin shot the ball well, but not 25 points well. His point total was helped BIG TIME by the refs putting him on the line, calling bogus fouls.

2. The refs only called Douglas once toward the end of the game for his push off. He was pushing off of Smith and Estrada ALL NIGHT! If the refs called the game fairly, many of his points would not have been because of his illegal push-offs.

3. Calvin still had problems handeling the ball. He turned it over at least 4 times that I counted. And he didn't even handle the ball nearly as much as he did the last game.

Calvin plays with heart. He seems like a good kid. If he wants to play at a mid major, he will need to put some serious work on his ability to handle the ball and his defense. His shot goes in when he is not forcing it, so he just needs to keep having good shot selections.

CALVIN---
Antioch has 2 weeks left of league games, then your highschool career is over. Good luck to you at the next level.
