What do you consder locked up? I would think you would consider locking up a point guard would mean you disrupt his ability to run the teams offense, and get him to turn the ball over. Incase you missed it, DLS won by than 23, Smith had about 7 assists, ran his teams offense fine, and only turned the ball over once. (And wow did Rivera have a monster game!)
IF YOU CAN READ THIS, IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL, IT IS THE SECOND TIME I AM TYPING IT: I NEVER CALLED SMITH THE BEST DEFENDER IN THE BVAL.
My point was and is simply: Calvin is not as good as the hype machine in Antioch said he was, and neither is the team. I was not pub'ing Smith so much as I was pointing out that some Antioch fans were gratuitous in their claims about Calvin and his team. So let's drop it already.....like Dela did your boys![/b]

Smith ACTUALLY had 9 assists & 5 steals acoording to the Contra Costa Times, while disrupting Heritage offense over & over again.
Look People,
The father of a female Sacred Heart Ppayer was killed at half time tonight. He was outside in front of the school. All I wanted to do once I heard, was find my child and to make sure my child was safe. Keep things in perspective. We can cheer and have fun and maybe even disagree with the refs, but it is a shame when stuff has to come to the games.

Good points. You don't have to try to hit below the belt. I'm a very educated & intelligent person. I was simply asking you your thoughts.
I will address your points without questioning your intelligence. Ultimately, this is not about you or me because we did not play in the game, so let's focus on the players.
Yes, Smith did have 8 or 9 assists (to wide open team-mates that were knocking down 3's everywhere) and he did have 5 steals. But you failed to mentioned he only had 3 points. I believe that was his low for the year. It wasn't like he wasn't trying to score, the fact is that Knox didn't let him score.
Speaking of Knox, even though Heritage didn't report thier highlights to the CC Times he finished with 7 points, 4 steals, 5 assists, & 5 rebounds. He would have had more assists but the refs. call a couple of late charges (after the players had scored baskets from assists from Knox).
Rivera did have a monster game. Great kid, great game!
So, my question to you? Even though DLS beat Heritage by 20, who won the guard battle between Smith & Knox?

Jose Rivera won the guard battle and Smith was smart enough to feed the hot hand and not get caught up in a frivolous debate keep him from the real battle....THE GAME!
Knox is a serious player and a D1 prospect and scored 4 more pts than Smith. GO BLUE & B.Wood

I think my boys Jose & B.Smitty dusted both of the Heritage guards and Spartans rule (over whatever Heritage is...). DLS backcourt -28pts, 14 assists, 8 steals, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 turnovers to Heritage's backcourt - 14pts,7 assists,4 steals,6 rebounds, 0 blocks, and 9 turnovers(not counting the 2 charges, which is a lost possession). In Spartans rulebook. Rivera & Smitty -1, the Heritage boys -0....But who's counting.
I've seen both of the young men mentioned and have heard .
they have been friends since grade school, i think that neither of them had they're best game. Yet it's great to see their competiveness and respect for each other's game. I think that they will both go very far, because each of them possesses some unique qualities and heart, that makes both of their games attractive to us at the next level. Boys keep getting better and working hard to bring IT every game.

It would be more accurate to grade the kids on the positions they played for the game. Smith played PG and Knox played the 2. (Also shouldn’t he pass the ball to the open man? Why be critical of that? That’s what a good PG does)
A PG: I look at his ability to run the offense (i.e. ball handling, creating plays, & decision making), his ability to play defense, and then to a lesser extent scoring. I would give Smith an A- overall. He did have an off game shooting; I didn’t see the defense being the ENTIRE cause of it, but Knox did put great pressure on him. Why didn’t e have more points? It could’ve just been one of those nights, or the beating he took around the rack. He did miss about 5 min when he came out for what looked like leg cramps, and those could’ve affected him in the 2cnd half? He did what his team needed from him, and DLS didn’t need any more points; they needed him to run the team. I like the fact that he wasn’t forcing any shots; he took open lanes, and open shots. Bottom-line 3 points with 9 assists (I guess I miss counted), and 5 steals in a 23-point win, for a PG.
A shooting guard: which is what Knox played, I would grade more on scoring, then defense and support of his teammates. I would give him a B overall for the game. He couldn't figure out how to be effective offensively against Rivera's defense (Rivera has a few inches on him, but Knox still needs to be able to overcome that (I believe he can). Why couldn’t he? Maybe it just was an off night; maybe it is due to playing teams who don’t play team defense (just about everybody in the BVAL). On offense he had a tough defender on him, and tuned the ball over a few times, and he needed to have a bigger game than 7 points for his team to have had a chance to win. He did do a solid job on Smith defensively, didn’t give him anything easy.
I wish Knox would have ran the point, I think he would have done it better than the 2 guys they had running it, (The back up was a turn over waiting to happen, and their starter kept trying to get fancy, and every time he did Smith just poked the ball out). It would have been a treat to see Knox vs. Smith on both ends.
Rivera gets the A+, obvious player of the game. Blocked 2-3 of Knox’s shots, caused him to turn it over a few times and always had pressure on him for a great defensive effort on a great offensive player. On offense he had 23 points, and a number of assists (He also had a great game vs. Antioch).
Heard Antioch pulled one out from Pittsburgh in a messy one, keeping their second place hopes alive. Anyone have some insight on that one?
PS someone else posted his assists and steals, not me.

I'd give the edge to Smith, had a better game for a PG then Knox did for a SG. Both are exciting to watch, neither had their best game.

Good Analysis. The same thing happened last year when these two players met (in both games). They both nulified each others game. I have much respect for both players, and I hope Knox will get the chance to run the point in the 2nd game. The future is bright for both players.
Now Jose is just outright ballin right now. The hard work he put in the last 3 years is paying dividends for him.
