The Mustangs of Monte Vista slowly chipped away at a 1st quarter 10 point American lead to a 61-45 victory.
At the end of the 1st quarter American was leading 18 - 8. The lead came from a run where the Eagles scored 13 unanswered points in the final four minutes. #22 from American hit 3 three pointers during the run.
In the second quarter the teams switched roles as Monte Vista capitalized on a 14 to 4 to end the quarter. The run was sparked by tough defense and 5 points each from Brian Barbour and Tyerelle Phillips. The score at the half was 33 - 27.
The third quarter saw both teams battling back and forth and Monte Vista was still ahead by 6, 45 - 39. Monte Vista used a solid hi-low game against American's 3-2 zone to get some easy baskets. American took advantage of 3 three pointers from #14.
The fourth quarter was highlighted by the Mustang defense that limited the Eagles to just 6 points in the quarter. Monte Vista ended the game on a 12 to nothing run.
Monte Vista was led by Cameron Fenely who led all scorers with 20 points and 2 blocked shots. Jeff Allen had 16 and the Mustang Quarterback Drew McCallister had 11. #22 for American led their team with 17 points.
Monte Vista will now start league play on the 7th at Granada. American starts league play on Friday at Irvington.
