Possible Match ups:
Oak Grove vs. DLS: OG will be fighting an uphill battle if they face DLS because it is so hard to beat DLS when you are seeing them for the first time.
McClymonds vs. Oak Grove: Even though OG looked good for the first 3 quarters in their first match up since the Nor Cal playoffs, it is obvious that with Powell, Mack should take care of them if they face them again.
Newark: shouldn’t be a problem for DLS or McClymonds because if you put them up against a well disciplined team with talent…. well, I think last years game vs. CAL said it all, Newark will always fall apart. I know what you’re thinking; Newark beat Branson! True, but Branson is having a real down year and Newark still only beat them by 6. (Not hating on Branson, just they are having a down year, but they will still make some noise because of their coaching ie. DLS last year, they could still go deep in their divisions playoffs)
McClymonds vs. DLS: The MLK should not be disappointing this year! This will be a real treat for all of us prep fans! McClymonds won the last time they met in a game that counted and they will be facing the same challenge as Monte Vista would be (That is if MV faces DLS in the NCS again, which they should) to beat an Allocco coached team twice in a row (odds are against them). What they do have in their favor is that they have Damon Powell who could be a problem for DLS’s big men, who play soft at times. DLS has JohnMcCarthur who can play real tough, and Jefferson Powers 6'7 but very slender kid who likes to shoot the J, but both have shown problems defending athletic bigs.
One great match up should be 09’ standouts William Cherry vs. Brandon Smith. Cherry is off to a great start (I believe he is averaging double figures). I saw Smith in the Chris V. tournament, he had a tough game offensivley (even though he wasn’t getting foul calls when he went to the rack) but his defense was really solid with 5+ steals that game (I have heard he’s a beast on D) Another key match up will be Brandon Thomas vs. Frank Otis Jr. I saw Thomas keep Otis Jr. under control during a summer game (2006) but Mooks definitely had the advantage during their playoff game.
I saw the playoff game and thought Allocco made 2 mistakes. 1.He should have had more confidence in Thomas and left him in longer instead of pulling him out so quickly, and 2. Allocco relyed too heavily on 3 pointers. In years past this could have worked for the Spartans, but last year he only had 2 outside threats (Ryan Silva who was solid but graduated, and Dominic Martellaro who was MVP of their tournament a few weeks ago). McClymonds took a page from the Monte Vista game book and put pressure on the DLS shooters and made them shoot with a hand in their face (which they couldn’t) and forced DLS to beat them on the inside (which was their weakness last year, they had no significant inside presence). 3 Things that won t fo rthe Warriors: 1. Coach Nathaniel’s (who is a class act and one of the best coaches in CA) strategy of copying what Monte Vista did vs. DLS in the NCS, 2. Frank O’s play on the inside, and 3. Vincent McGhee’s passing.
Can’t wait to see what happens in Jan., or in March if we are fortunate to see them matched up again!
