In the corner of the NBA classroom, Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie has been collecting building blocks in exchange for his older toys. Even he's not quite sure what he's making just yet, but the subtle grin that grows with every new piece is enough to make his classmates curious. He has been dubbed the smartest kid before, after all, and so they will keep watching to see if he can do it again. Yet while no one expects this project to
be completed this season or even next, certain requirements must be met to maintain interest and promote progress. The 2008-09 season, in other words, isn't really about the record at all. It's about forward movement from all involved, from second-year coach Reggie Theus and his hot-seat status to the youthful bunch he is being asked to develop. It's about Petrie keeping a watchful eye for more change, from trade possibilities that could advance the process to looking ahead to next June's draft, when two crucial
first-round picks should be added to the bunch. It's about getting one season closer to the always-powerful financial freedom, salary cap room that could come next summer but most certainly will arrive in 2010, when the best free-agent crop in more than a decade will be available. And it's about the fans watching even if this team isn't worth watching, knowing the greater good is at play in so many ways. The blocks are being stacked, one by one. But the building is far from over.
